Kunihiko Tosa (1932-2021)

Kunihiko Tosa (土佐邦彦, Tosa Kunihiko), born 1st January 1932 in Hiroshima, Japan, passed away at the age of 89 years old after a long sickbed on the 26th February 2021 at 02:00 AM Japanese local time.

Studied judo and kendo, after which he later studied karate. In May 1950 he began training Shotokan. Later in 1952, he met Seiken Shukumine, under whom he immediately started training. A year later, Seiken Shukumine named his style Genseiryu (1953), and opened a karate dojo in the Japanese Self Defense Forces, Tachikawa Garison.

When Seiken Shukumine continued with his new system, Taido, in 1962, Kunihiko Tosa chose to continue with Genseiryu karate. Later in 1965, he opened the honbu dojo (head dojo) in Asaka, Saitama prefecture. In 1959 Kunihiko Tosa founded Butokukai and for international members the Genseiryu Karate-do International Federation. He became the president of both in 1971 taking over from Hiroyasu Tamae and passing on the title to his son Kiyohiko Tosa in 2014. Held the rank of 9th dan, which is the highest grade ever awarded to anyone in Genseiryu. Kunihiko Tosa was also awarded 8th dan by the Japan Karate-do Federation. Kunihiko Tosa's dojo, now headed by his son Kiyohiko Tosa is located in Asaka, an area in the prefecture of Saitama just outside Tokyo.
